The faculty of the School of Visual Art and Design at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, professional-track instructor position at the rank of Instructor to begin August 16, 2025. The position is a 9 month appointment with a teaching load of 8 courses for the academic year. An additional administrative appointment opportunity with this position may extend the position to an 11-month appointment and a 3/3/1 load with the inclusion of responsibilities to manage the Design Studio and the Design Print Lab. The instructor position and the administrative appointment are annual appointments that may be renewed contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.

Additional courses taught by this position include introductory courses in design technology foundations and typographic design. New courses in entrepreneurship and business strategies for creatives could also be developed.

About the Graphic Design + Illustration program The Graphic Design + Illustration (GD+I) program is a concentration of the Studio Art BFA in the School of Visual Art and Design. Students undergo a portfolio review before admission into the program, pursue internships, and have a capstone experience before graduation. Students in the program regularly win awards and recognition with the American Advertising Federation, AIGA, Creative Quarterly, and more. The GD+I program has an engaged student body and five full-time faculty who teach courses in motion, interaction, interface and experience design, augmented reality, design with AI and machine learning, product and packaging design, typography, branding, systems, traditional illustration, drawing, and digital illustration. Designers and illustrators in our program understand the objects and interactions we create are part of larger systems and that we have responsibilities as message-makers. Required Education & Experience

Candidates must have an MFA or MDES in design or a PhD degree in design or terminal degree in a closely related field by the start date of employment. Applicants must have expertise in graphic design, current design technologies, and the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, adjunct instructors, and graduate students on curriculum matters.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will lead and support the expansion of the award-winning Graphic Design and Illustration (GD+I) BFA program through teaching, mentorship, and service. The position requires teaching courses across the design curriculum, mentoring students, and leading The Design Studio, a public facing, student-run studio housed in the School of Visual Art and Design. The Design Studio is an experiential learning capstone experience for BFA design students; students work with local, regional and national clients to develop strategy-based branding and marketing materials. Additional courses taught by this position include introductory courses in design technology foundations and typographic design. New courses in entrepreneurship and business strategies for creatives could also be developed.

Overview

The Graphic Specialist fulfills advertising and design needs for the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) including design, development and presentation of internal and external advertising creative, social media graphics, brand creative, sales campaign creative, and other SCEL needs. This position will help execute the in-house print operations. The Graphic Specialist will work closely with internal clients, including marketing, product development, sales and promotions. This position is at will, and not covered by the South Carolina Employee Grievance Procedures Act.

Duties & Responsibilities

  •  Works with an award-winning creative and marketing team to assist in the creation of print material, including point of purchase, printed sales collateral, digital assets and other signage, as needed.
  • Works with the marketing team to conceptualize and execute social graphics, app graphics and outdoor digital signage for usage across the state. 
  • Assists in the development and execution of sales and marketing campaigns, working with the Creative Team to manage the print production schedule for all printed pieces produced in-house.
  • Works on, and becomes proficient with the inhouse, large format printer and cutter.
  • Works within assigned timelines to produce materials that serve the intended functions determined by the Marketing Department.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

For a Graphics Specialist II role, candidate must possess a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design, Marketing, Advertising, Media Arts or closely related field(s) and have 3-5 years of relevant work experience. 

For a Graphics Specialist I role, candidate must possess a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design, Marketing, Advertising, Media Arts or closely related field(s) and have 1-3 years of relevant work experience. 

All candidates must be able to submit a portfolio of work (online or in print).

Competencies

In order to perform the job successfully, the candidate should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Adobe Illustrator
  •  Adobe Photoshop
  •  Adobe InDesign
  •  Adobe After Effects
  •  Apple Keynote and/or Microsoft PowerPoint
  •  Working knowledge of print production and retouching process
  •  Advanced in using graphic design software in a MAC environment

Abilities

The Graphic Specialist must have (1) the ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality; (2) presents themselves in a professional manner and have the ability to interact with employees at all levels within the organization and with outside contacts; (3) the ability to use creative freedom to execute another’s vision for a project; (4) the ability to understand and achieve the functional purpose and business goals of each project; (5) strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills, and have the ability to present ideas clearly and concisely; and (6) the ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously, and be detail oriented.
