AAF and SAF Host the Inaugural Student ADDY Workshop

Every December, AAF of the Midlands holds an ADDY┬« Workshop. During the events we’d look at the crowd and think, “Where are all the students?”
They were few and far between.

So, we laid out a plan to bring more attention to the Student ADDY Awards and increase participation:

Step 1: Co-host a workshop with USC’s Student Advertising Federation (SAF).
Step 2: Have the workshop during a regularly scheduled SAF meeting (that didn’t interfere with classes).
Step 3: Make the event free.
Step 4: Offer an incentive ($15 off their first Student ADDY entry… and free pizza).
Step 5: Open it up to all local colleges (not only USC students).
Step 6: Recruit students to help get the word out through social media and posters in their schools.

We began putting all of these items in place with the help of University of South Carolina Student Advertising Federation President Stephen Bandstra. And with those efforts in motion, we set out in search of sponsors…

Columbia advertising agencies The Adams Group and Chernoff Newman both saw the value of this event. They believed in how it could help develop our future advertising leaders, and generously volunteered to be the presenting sponsors.

Their generosity also helped generate support for the Advertising Education Sponsor (AES) fund, which helps college students in AAF District 3 compete in the National Student Advertising Competition.

After much anticipation, we staged our program to a packed room full of students eager to learn about the ADDY awards. On the night of November 7th, District 3 Treasurer Ace Evans and District 3 ADDY Co-chair Melissa Harper presented a comprehensive program that introduced students to the Student ADDY Awards, got them excited, and taught them how to put their entries together using the new ADDY Software.

It was a huge success! The students asked lots of questions, brought samples of their entries, and began the process of entering the Student ADDYs. It was a great kickoff to ADDY season!

Thank you to everyone who helped made our first student ADDY workshop such a success!

Are you an advertising professional? Want to get a peek at the new ADDY software? Come to our ADDY Workshop on December 7th at 11:45am at 701 Whaley!
